Meet True Archdale
True Archdale is a contemporary multimedia artist based in Whitefish, Montana. Born and raised in Wolf Point, Montana, and a member of the Assiniboine tribe, her work blends symbolic forms and design elements of her Indigenous culture with abstract techniques. Offering a thoughtful bridge between past and present, her paintings often feature ley lines—energetic pathways drawn from ancient beliefs—used as visual metaphors for connection, memory, and the unseen forces that shape our world.
Working primarily in acrylic, Archdale begins each piece with expressive, gestural finger painting. The loose, organic forms that emerge help guide the painting’s direction, while layered additions of colored pencil and oil pastel build depth, movement, and transition. Her goal is not only to create visually engaging work, but also to contribute a personal, nuanced voice to the evolving narrative around contemporary Native art.
Her creative path began with both music and art, earning a dual degree at the University of Northern Colorado. As a classically trained baritone saxophonist, Archdale approaches both sound and visual art as forms of rhythm and balance. Three decades spent in Los Angeles expanded her world—collaborating with artists, musicians, and performers who shared her free-spirited creative approach and passion for experimentation. She is also an award-winning filmmaker; her film Wolf Point: Red Road Stories explores themes of heritage, community, and cultural values.
Beyond the studio, Archdale moves fluidly through other realms—as an outdoor wilderness athlete, passionate chef, and master fitness trainer with more than 30 years of professional experience. “Much of my inspiration comes from time spent exploring the wilderness,” she says, “where land becomes a teacher, guiding the spirit of my work.”
